The Briefing Room will be losing one of the sweetest White House Press Secretaries in recent years. Jay Carney, who btw looks like an altar boy I once knew, happens to be married to a fellow journalist, Claire Shipman. He told the morning news feed that he has two small children and he was missing too much of their lives! I almost spit up my coffee.

What a relief, to hear a man in a position of power say such a thing, proudly, bravely and without rancor. Is it just coincidence that Shipman and her co-author Katty Kay just published a book about the confidence gap between men and women? I recently wrote about “The Confidence Code” and a woman’s tendency to talk less in meetings and ruminate more; “tortured cycles of useless self-recrimination.”

Reminds me of Josh Levs, a CNN reporter, who recently fought CNN’s parent company Time Warner for equal paternity leave. Moms and adoptive parents were allowed 10 weeks family leave whereas dads only got 2 weeks paid leave. “It can’t be a conversation by women about women,” Levs said of resolving family-work conflicts. “In a country that prides itself on family values, we need to do a much better job of valuing families … and that includes fathers.”

One of the best things we women of the 60s and 70s did was to raise our sons to expect to be involved in their children’s lives. Millennials today want to not just be in the birthing room, they want to be present in the sturm and drang of childhood. Hooray I say! Let’s all lift our coffee cups to men who change diapers.

And to my honey, who stuck by me for 35 years as of tomorrow, I’d like to say in brief, “Cheers!” Even if he did hang one piece of wallpaper upside down a long, long time ago, he proved to be the most loving father and supportive husband in the world. For sitting with me in the family room while “sleep training,” for teaching them how to ride bikes and drive cars, for telling me countless times that everything would be OK, even after endless days of toddler turmoil and teenage angst. I salute you dear partner in life. And I’d pick you again, in a heartbeat!    IMG_0073

Something a journalist said on Twitter caught my attention a few days ago. I even had the pleasure of this person “favoriting” my response to the situation – while everyone else in the BIG media company the journalist worked for  received 10 weeks of parental leave after the birth of a baby, this particular parent was eligible for only 2 weeks. Why?

Because he is the biological father!                                                                   http://joshlevs.tumblr.com/post/65567442495/why-ive-filed-an-eeoc-charge-against-time-warner

It’s strange that the parental leave policy at Time Warner does not discriminate against same-sex couples having a baby, they get 10 weeks of paid leave, each person.  Adoption, surrogacy, no problem. The 10 week policy applies to any new adoptive or surrogate parent, man or woman. But this is their third child, and Josh just couldn’t get the company to budge. So he had to sue, because sometimes a challenge in court is what it takes to right an obvious wrong. Here is what one of his lawyer’s said:

Time Warner’s excuse for treating biological fathers differently than mothers is that women experience a period of medical disability associated with child birth.  While this sounds reasonable at first blush, the rationale does not square with the 10 weeks given to adoptive parents who require no medical recovery time.  Moreover, biological mothers receive the 10 weeks of maternity leave IN ADDITION to their full short-term disability benefits.

Then I just happened to bump into this guy, Joss Whedon, who starts ranting about feminists and comparing the word to the word taliban. Oh you know I was interested. “I hate feminists,” he says, and he begins dissecting the word; a wordsmith who actually made me rethink my relationship with Gloria Steinem and NOW. http://www.upworthy.com/a-room-full-of-feminists-just-applauded-a-guy-who-attacked-feminists-wait-for-it-re2-7a?c=ucfb1  Thank you Rebecca Eisenberg for bringing this discussion to light!

It seems that even rich, white guys can be discriminated against. In this post-feminist, “genderist” world I hope that Josh Levs rallies men and women and transgenders to his cause equally. Because our newborn babies deserve as much time and love as our corporations can deliver under the law. Because we old “feminists” taught our sons well; now it’s high time Madame Justice took off her blindfold.

Hazily coming up out of a semi-good night’s sleep, I heard what I thought was a duck being strangled. Then Ms Bean’s bark was added to a chorus of early morning, pre-dawn sounds. Bob was heading into the hospital, and I was stumbling toward the door to see if our small brown shelter dog thought she was a large golden retriever. There, sitting regally in the top of a tree near our driveway, was a very real, very mad peahen!

Once upon a time I had purchased 2 peacocks, who are always male, for my brother Mike’s birthday. His home in MS has a beautiful 14 acre park for a backyard and I thought this would be the best lawn decoration ever. As soon as they were delivered to the manse, one flew into a tree and proceeded to squawk to his buddy, “Hey let’s split this place, no peahens!” Here is a picture of the family at my niece’s wedding in a beautiful, but peacock-less Japanese garden.

And while I am writing this, I’ve been informed by my daughter via text that she is indeed having a girl! She and her husband are in the doctor’s office and she has managed to text me a picture of the ultrasound. I am beyond jubilant and think my peahen was announcing this like a trumpeter to the Queen of Little Sleep this morning, “Wake up, wake up, it’s going to be a girl!” And honey, I’m ordering this onsie for you right now. Cause you know it’s not a war on caterpillars we’ve been fighting ever since your Great Great Grandmother Anna Robinson, my Nana, got the vote, as one Republican has opined. http://www.mediaite.com/tv/rnc-chair-reince-priebus-compares-war-on-women-to-war-on-caterpillars-its-a-fiction/

We’re going to dream big for you baby girl. It’s going to be cups and ice all the way, in a land where peacocks and peahens play.
